The engineering phase has refined the plant’s technical solutions, process integration and production capacity. Commercial production is targeted to start in early 2030.

The pre-engineering of the Southwest Finland Biorefinery, also known as the FEL 2 engineering phase, has been completed. The results confirm that the more compact and partially modular plant design presented in August provides the basis for the project’s next engineering phases.

Based on the selected plant concept and refined feedstock volumes, the biorefinery is expected to produce approximately 395 GWh of renewable methane annually. Of this, approximately 250 GWh, or 18,000 tonnes per year, will be low-carbon-intensity biomethane. In addition, the plant will produce approximately 145 GWh, or 10,500 tonnes, of RFNBO-compliant e-methane annually.

The methane produced by the biorefinery can be supplied to customers in liquefied form, injected into the European gas network, or delivered through a combination of the two routes. This enables renewable methane to be supplied to several markets and for use in heavy transport, shipping and industry.

At the Southwest Finland Biorefinery, the production of biomethane and renewable e-methane is integrated within a single facility. Carbon dioxide generated in the biogas process is captured and combined with hydrogen produced using renewable electricity. This produces e-methane. Integrating the processes improves the plant’s efficiency by making effective use of its energy and material flows.

The project has also secured access to a long-term feedstock base sourced from the surrounding region. The biorefinery planned for Oripää in Southwest Finland is designed to process approximately 625,000 tonnes of manure, field biomass and clean side streams from the food industry annually. In addition to renewable fuels, it will produce recycled fertilisers and reduce the nutrient load entering the Archipelago Sea.

The project is now proceeding towards its next engineering phases, commercial agreements and investment decision.
